So after another week of checking and helping my bees through a severe wasp attack, below I have an update for you.
WASP ATTACK_SUNDAY 11th October _UPDATE!
My colony was losing the battle against the wasps!
So, on Sunday, I decided it was time to take further action. I installed an underfloor entrance and placed the entrance block with an anti-robbing screen in front to help defend the hive against the unwelcome invaders.
I also installed 3 wasp traps close to the hives. Checked the flight path of wasps and decided on a triangular formation.
With everything in place, all I could do was keep my fingers crossed and hope the colony would make it through the night.
I scheduled my next inspection for Monday to see if my little ladies were holding their own.
Fingers crossed for a better outcome!
WASP ATTACK UPDATE – MONDAY 12th October
Back to the apiary again to check on the girls and see if the underfloor entrance has helped foil the wasps!
I I checked the hive and prepared for a possible removal to another apiary.
Even if you’re not a beekeeper, this is a great insight into the challenges honeybees face, both with and without our help.
These girls have some really good genetics, and they’re absolutely worth the effort it takes to protect them and keep their genetics in the honeybee gene pool.
They’ve had the fight of their lives this week! Not only have they had to deal with the wasp attack, but there’s also the added stress of me having to inspect the hive this late in the season. It’s never ideal, but sometimes we have to step in and do what’s best for the colony.
The results speak for themselves! There were no wasps in the hive, the underfloor entrance had worked, added with the wasp traps to lure them away, I think we were winning the battle.
Every colony is different, and sometimes protecting the bees means making difficult decisions. These girls deserve every chance we can give them!
WASP ATTACK UPDATE – TUESDAY 13th October
Back to the apiary again to check on the girls and see if the underfloor entrance continues to foil the wasps!
I checked the wasp traps and released the European Hornets and checked the hive.
I will continue to check throughout this week with only lifting the lid and checking the feeder. I don’t want to open the hive again.
The girls are managing to fend off the wasps and there are no wasps in the feeder.
I have continued this all week, filling the wasp traps daily and releasing hornets.
Today (Sunday 18th October) I checked the traps and then found the wasp nest in the manage, I have treated this to eliminate the wasps and tomorrow I will locate a wasp trap in the menage area.
Its been a huge effort and may seem overkill for one colony, however, I am a beekeeper with a small number of hives and i want to preserve the local bees as much as possible.
